Sexual relationships played a large role in early Greece, seeing as compared to today’s standards Lysistrata comes over as a very smutty play. However even although Greece in the past has a strong sexual involvement, in my opinion the women in Lysistrata operate on the most superficial level imaginable, with sex seemingly their driving force, “walk through fire, or anything else you want – but renounce sex, never!”. The plans of these saviours of Greece are based around a sex strike, to force the men to make peace. Women of the real life in the 5th Century BC had just about nil say in political issues. They had no vote and they did not even have the right to divorce in ancient Greece. The male characters in the play were shown to all have the typical huge “erect phallus” at all times and actually end up begging the women to have sex with them through persuasion, “surely you can’t harden your heart against your baby!” Cinesias try’s to use the means of getting his wife to come back home with him through his child, just for sex as shown by the play. This desperation the play shows actually leads to the men giving into the women and calling peace, “we know what the allies will want: the same as we do – a fuck!!”
